Chapter 10
GRAHAM decided to try a different bar the next Saturday night, so he drove to the Trip. He had only been to this bar a few times, but he liked its sophistication. The Trip had three levels: an expensive Italian restaurant in the basement, a cabaret stage surrounded by intimate tables beyond a large bar on the main floor, and a go-go boy dancing bar on the top floor, where five or six nearly nude college-age boys danced on raised platforms. They wore little more than G-strings, but these were constantly stuffed with bills from appreciative fans who splurged on their favorite gorgeous boys with generous tips.
Graham decided to try the cabaret floor. He ordered a scotch sour on the rocks and wandered around the bar area until he spotted an empty table near the stage, up the stairs. Just as he arrived and was about to sit down, someone else beat him to it and sat down first.
“Were you going to sit here?” the guy asked. “I’m sorry….”
“Oh, that’s okay,” Graham replied. “I’m sure I’ll get another table in a few minutes.”
“I wouldn’t bet on that,” the guy said. “The show is about to start, and the singer in this place is really popular. Want to join me? I’m here by myself.”
“Are you sure you wouldn’t mind? I wouldn’t want to put you out or anything.”
“Of course not. Do sit down and join me.” He held out his hand. “My name is Aaron. Aaron Rutledge.”
“Well, thanks, Aaron. I’m Graham Thomas.” He sat down across the table from Aaron.
“Have you been here before?” Aaron asked.
“A few times this fall,” Graham replied. “Not lately, though.”
“Then you haven’t heard the new singer. Her name is Andrea Casey, and she is absolutely wonderful. As a matter of fact, she’s the reason I come here every week. She’s sort of a combination of Streisand and Liza Minnelli. She does ballads… and funny songs and… oh, you’ll see.”
At that moment a strikingly beautiful, red-haired woman dressed in an emerald-green, low-cut formal gown came up the stairs and stopped at Aaron and Graham’s table. She wore brilliant diamond earrings and a wide diamond necklace that matched the sparkle of her eyes. She smiled at the two men warmly.
“Aaron, you little doll,” she said. “I’m so glad you’re here again.” She leaned down to kiss him on the cheek. “And where did you find this handsome one?” she asked, pointing to Graham with long fingernails painted a bright cherry red.
“Andrea, this is my new friend Graham. Graham, this is the famous Andrea Casey.”
“You silly thing,” Andrea said, flashing a smile with dazzling white teeth.
“Well, it’s true, Andrea,” Aaron protested. “This month’s After Dark has a paragraph in it about you.”
“It was just a little paragraph,” she said. “Only a couple of sentences really. And I didn’t especially like that comment about me trying to copy Streisand.” She frowned.
“Ladies and Gentlemen,” a loud voice announced over the sound system, “the Trip is proud to present the Five
